Much of the original motivation for opening the community center came from a concern for public safety. When people are isolated in a low income community and do not know their neighbors, terrible things can happen. As neighbors come together to organize Community Cleanups, to build parks and plan celebrations, the Community Center has invited the police to participate. This effort has helped to develop a trust and understanding within the community.
15 years of community organizing has lead to a much safer community.
One of the many activities that the center has promoted over the years is participation in the Spanish Citizens Policy Academy to teach people both their rights and responsibilities as engaged citizens.
