1. The libraries' partnership with Beach Flats benefits both the Beach Flats Community and the greater Santa Cruz community.  Since the fall of 1998 the Bookmobile has visited the area every other week.  Bookmobile visits build community, foster lifelong learning and library use, and the bookmobile acts as an adjunct to the community center whenever it is in the area. Children and families learn to get information from the bookmobile, from branch libraries and online.

  2. Outreach staff has provided a variety of programs over the years including:

  3. Stories and crafts at the annual Thanksgiving dinner, Dia de Los Ninos and other community events

  4. Monthly selection of books for the preschools and the homework centers

  5. Regular storytimes for preschoolers and school age children

  6. Summer reading programs

  7. Facilitating visits to the Central Branch Library

  8. Training workshops for homework center volunteers

  9. Cooperating on a First 5 grant and producing a CD of stories, songs and sayings

Lambda Nu and the Santa Cruz Public Library to the rescue!!! Helping us out of a bind.

Since the Family School Coop lost Headstart funding, the BFCC has been without a consistent source of new reading materials.  In January of 2010, one of our dedicated volunteers was able to secure a donation of 400 lbs of new but unbound books from Bookshop Santa Cruz. Upon posting our need for binding support on our Fanpage, the goddesses of the Santa Cruz public library outreach staff responded to the call, that very day offering needles, thread, bookbinding awls and a wealth of expertise for a one-day bookbinding tutorial held at the community center in late February. The bookbinding event was a great success, as BFCC staff members, the interested ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority of UCSC  and outstanding individual volunteers, bound 60 children’s books. The kids were thrilled with their new books, including the titles, “Monsters Don’t Eat Broccoli” and “How to Potty Train your Monster!”   We still have many more books left to bind.

We love books and monsters!!!!
